shiatsu

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork with its roots in ancient Oriental Medicine and Anma (Japanese massage practiced by the blind).  Shiatsu understands the human being as a system of energy (traditionally called Ki) that circulates in channels, throughout the body, called meridians.  These meridians have physical, psychological and spiritual functions.  For many reasons the Ki can become obstructed causing physical, emotional, mental and spiritual disharmony.
In shiatsu the practitioner contacts the Ki and helps restore its natural flow by applying pressure with the hands, thumbs or elbows and with simple stretching and movement techniques.  This can relieve many symptoms, aiding the body’s own natural healing abilities and help move the body/mind/spirit towards a more harmonious state.
As well as giving symptomatic relief for health problems, shiatsu also looks for the source of a problem within a person and the way he or she is living their life.  Addressing this deeper level can then bring about a deeper healing.  Shiatsu views the person as a whole and empowers the client to play an active role in their recovery process.  Shiatsu is also used preventatively by improving a person’s underlying health and reducing their chances of becoming ill in the future.

Benefits of Shiatsu include:

  • Eases tension and stiffness, improves posture and flexibility
  • Improves circulation and respiration
  • Restores and balances energy
  • Relaxation of body and mind
  • Enhances well being
  • Aids release of toxins
  • Aids the healing process
  • Supports other treatments; conventional and complementary
  • Plays a preventative role.

What Shiatsu can help includes:

  • Problems with muscles or joints, back pain/tension, low energy/fatigue, problems with digestion, breathing or blood pressure, menstrual pain/difficulties, menopausal symptoms, headaches/migraines, depression, and insomnia.
  • It can also be used for emotional support, self-development and working with addictions.
  • It can be a valuable aid during pregnancy, labour and post-natally supporting the major changes taking place on many levels.
  • It can help alleviate a wide range of conditions as well as having an overall affect on general health and well-being.
  • It can help reduce the use of conventional medicine.
What happens during a Shiatsu session:
The initial visit will last approx. 1 hour 30 mins. whereby an in-depth consultation will be taken followed by hands-on treatment and feedback.  Any subsequent sessions will last approx. 1 hour and will involve a shorter consultation, hands-on treatment and feedback.
The treatment takes place on a futon with the client fully clothed (although in special circumstances a chair or a massage couch can be used).  Loose fitting clothing is advised, for comfort and ease of movement.  It is recommended not to eat a heavy meal 2 hours prior to treatment.
Lifestyle, exercise and dietary advice may be given where appropriate.  Also recommendations for subsequent treatments may be given, this varies from person to person.
